A low-calorie summer salad from France, and an excerpt from Jana's Small Town Contemporary Romance, Strong Enough In 2014, my husband and I took a river cruise in the south of France. At the start of our vacation, we spent three days in Barcelona and...
Edible, Tasty, and Free My husband, Greg, and I embraced the vegetarianism lifestyle around eight years ago, but only in the past three years did we realize how much free food was in our yard. We live in rural North Carolina on the outskirts of a mid-sized...
Ferrets as pets, an extra spicey grilled cheese recipe , and a tasty excerpt from Kris Bock's sweet romance, Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café. Welcome, Kris! I've written six books featuring the workers and customers at a cat café, but I am unfortunately...
If only the walls could speak… In one hundred and fifty years, Blake's Folly, a silver boomtown notorious for its brothels, scarlet ladies, silver barons, speakeasies, and divorce ranches, has become a semi-ghost town. Although the old Mizpah Saloon is...
Erotic Romance Writer Incognito: Secret Lives, Forbidden Loves No Pigeonholes by Lisabet Sarai I’ve never been good at following genre rules. Partly this is because I hate reading, or writing, predictable stories. Partly, I suppose, I’m just plain contrary....
Contemporary Romance published by The Wild Rose Press Quite a few years ago, I got a job at Radio France, writing and broadcasting a daily program about the history of North American country music. I was in Laval, a small city in the west of France —...
The Romance Dance Romance is very much a dance, archaic and complicated, one that has to be re-learned, each time it appears. The first steps are always awkward, tentative, then just when we gain a bit of confidence, we trip over our own feet, stumble,...
Today's guest writer is C.L. Hart . Come and learn a little about her, discover how she makes tasty food with limited resources, and why she writes Fantasy Romance. There’s also an excerpt from her short story, Nyarlathotep’s Journey . C.L. Hart: writer...
My writing space in the country 1. Why did you choose this particular writing spot to draft your novel? J. Arlene: Because it’s beautiful. 2. Share a story (funny or serious) that occurred at your favourite writing spot. J. Arlene: This room looks beautiful...
Too little time? Try Short Stories! I’m in year 2 of empty-nesting and living in a perpetually spotless home that is also a bit too quiet. Tinsel and Tea Cakes evolved thanks to an open call for a holiday anthology by The Wild Rose Press. I loved the...
“Uh—Marek?” He turned, his eyes sweeping over her, taking in the thick, white towel fastened, sarong style, over her slender curves, and she felt her heartbeat increase again, sending tension along every single nerve. Cut this out. This is nothing but...
A heavy fat paw clapped him on the shoulder. Carston turned, found a jovial-looking, cigar-chewing individual grinning into his face. “I’ll bet you and Sherry have a lot to say to each other, seeing both of you are in the same line of business.” Life...
Perhaps she could avoid meeting Carston Hewlett again and circumvent disaster. Yes, she had enough on her agenda. A fling at a conference like this? That was positively banal. “There he is,” said Charlie, ripping into her thoughts. “On the left. You see?”...
Do I travel for research? I certainly do, and I often find myself in strange places and uncomfortable situations. For a recently completed non-fiction biography, I found myself tramping over frozen winter roads in backwoods Ukraine — not a soul in sight....
Muse Monday My guest today, J. Arlene Culiner, makes a great point. Through a book, you can travel the world! Armchair travel? Nothing like it. No last-minute panic while getting out to the airport; no check-in, or security check; no obnoxious seat partner...
Review In 1889, in the bustling silver boom town of Blake’s Folly, Nevada, a restless, dapper newspaperman falls for the courageous, self-sufficient woman who plays piano for the dance girls at the rowdy Mizpah Saloon. In 1926, with the silver mostly...
Humorous Romance, Hockey, and Linda O'Connor's recipe for curried cherry tomatoes. Read on! Thanks so much for hosting me, J. Arlene! I write humorous romances and one of the main characters is usually a doctor (mainly because it saves having to do research)....
Involuntarily, she shivered. She’d noticed him as soon as she’d entered the saloon, seen him leaning on the mahogany. A dangerous man? She hadn’t been afraid of him, not exactly. It had been something else. Dark-haired, a dark mustache, his black hat...
Food for Love Guest Author Kasi Blake: Why she loves writing romance, how she got started, and a delicious recipe for a Banana Smoothie that's perfect for hot summer days! There's also a tasty excerpt from her romance, The Business Engagement. The Six...
Just the usual (strange) conversation between spider fanatic Lucy Barnes and veterinarian Lance Potter... It was a grim evening of icy rain and violent wind, but here inside the shop, with its soft lamplight, deep shadows, and velvety fabrics, life was...
What inspires me as a writer? Absurdity. I love it. Silliness and bad behavior are equally delightful. Why? Because those are the things I need when creating pesky secondary characters or when I want to inject a little comic relief. The obnoxious woman...
I travel from Alabama to Florida, meet characters along the way, and remember Scotty, a neighbour, who did very well for herself. Come and listen in! Podcast: The Book Tour Episode Seventeen https://soundcloud.com/j-arlene-culiner/the-book-tour-episo...
Don’t you prefer reading about people who don’t need superficial trappings? I certainly do. What irritates me no end, is finding designer labels in books. I prefer authors — and their characters — to tickle my imagination with originality. Dressing my...
J. Arlene Culiner is a fellow Wild Rose, and the author of mysteries, narrative non-fiction, and romance. She has a new release to tell us about. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What do you do when you are not writing? I play several instruments...
Actress, photographer, social critical artist, musician and writer, J. Arlene Culiner, born in New York and raised in Toronto, has been living in England, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Holland and Hungary. She now resides in a 400-year-old former inn in a French village of no interest. Much to local dismay, she protects all creatures, especially spiders and snakes, and her wild garden is a bird and butterfly refuge. Her great passion is veering off the beaten track to discover forgotten communities with strange characters and very odd conversations, all of which she incorporates into short stories, mysteries, narrative non-fiction and romances.
